The History of Acrylic Paint?

Have you just started painting with acrylic paint and you want to learn more about this paint?

Here, Ari Glass, a painter and artist explains what acrylic paint is and where it comes from?

Acrylic paint is a very recent painting technique.

According to the Ari Glass Definition: “Acrylic paint is a kind of paint that contains a plasticized material, quick-drying paint, in which the pigments are contained in an emulsion of an acrylic polymer. Although they are soluble in water, once dry they are resistant to it. Especially noted for fast drying".

According to Glass, this type of painting has not always existed, as may be the case with watercolor. Oil painting also has a long history. However, the history of acrylic painting is a bit shorter.

The first synthetic paints appeared in the 1930s in the United States. These paints were basically used to paint cars or buildings. However, some painters began to use them for artistic purposes.

The American printers Leonor Color and Sam Golden, in 1949, created the Magma brand to market the painting.

Some artists like Barnett Newman or Morris Louis use this paint mixed with turpentine to color their works.

However, the talented painter, Glass indicates that the acrylic painting technique as we know it today was invented in 1963. It was the chemist Henry Levinson who invented this paint that can be diluted with water for a much more artistic representation. The first brand of acrylic paint is called Liquitex.

This is the painting that Andy Warhol used for his artwork.

Acrylic painting did not arrive in Europe until the 1960s, when Pierre Alechinsky discovered it during a trip to the United States.

Ari Glass indicates that currently, this paint is made of slightly natural or synthetic pigments. To this is added a binder made of water and acrylic resin to obtain the final texture.
